What are Low-Impact Workouts? 🤔
You'll hear the term "low impact" or "low intensity" when referring to workouts that put a "low amount of" or no stress on your joints — think walking, yoga, swimming, cycling, Pilates, and barre. Unlike higher-impact activities, like running, plyometrics and HIIT, there's no hard landing when your feet hit the ground. Why is this important? You're less likely to get injured during or after exercise, and it's safer for your joints.
How do Low-Impact Exercise Lead to Weight Loss?
Remember that exercise, or movement in general, can help you lose weight because you're moving your body and therefore are burning calories. For weight loss the goal is to be in a calorie deficit. Movement helps you expend more calories, increase your muscle mass, and burn fat. A lot of people question how low-impact exercises can be just as beneficial as high-impact ones. Know that we can burn fewer calories per minute with low-intensity exercise, but the tradeoff is we can sustain the exercise for longer. Workout length and intensity both play a key role in weight loss.
Food for Thought...🍎
The final thought I'd like to leave you with is to remember that exercise and nutrition work hand in hand. You can only eat healthy or only workout, but it's the healthy combination of the two that helps you really make those changes. Is it easy? No, it's a challenge for many of us! You are not alone! But if you're part of a community, or network of people that are working towards that same goal, it can be more motivating.
So, if you're looking for a group to keep you accountable and to make the journey more fun, come join BA Studios for a class! There are other Tucson folks that are looking to make some changes, too! 😊
